The Character Server is used to create applications involving dynamic character animation. You do not need the Character Server in order to use the Character Builder.

To evaluate the Character Server, please download it to your development machine, along with the Character Builder. You should have web server software such as IIS installed prior to running the installer. For more information on installing IIS on Windows XP Pro or Vista, please see KB112. For Apache installation notes, please see the post-installation Readme. In evaluation mode, the Character Server generates watermarked output via the CGI API, and the COM API will be disabled. Please contact our sales team if you require a timed trial that unlocks all features.

Speech Pack Download

Loquendo

Cepstral - We Build Voices
While frequently used with Text to Speech (TTS), the Character Builder does not come with any TTS voices. You can check to see which TTS voices are available on your system by looking for the Speech applet in the Control Panel. On Windows XP, if you don't have a Speech applet, or if you only have the Microsoft Sam voice, then you should install the Microsoft Speech Pack (MSMikeMary.msi) to get Microsoft Mike and Mary. The Microsoft Mike and Mary packages do not work with Vista however. Vista comes with Microsoft Anna, a female TTS engine. There are no free male TTS choices on Vista at this time. As a rule, free TTS voices sound robotic, and decent sounding TTS voices are subject to licensing restrictions regarding the distribution of the generated audio.

Media Semantics is able to offer a wide range of high-quality voices by Loquendo. We currently offer male and female voices in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and many more. These voices include several features ideal for use with character, including expressive cues, speech acts, and voice changing parameters.

Media Semantics has partnered with NeoSpeech to offer some of the highest quality North American voices on the market. We also carry Neo's eastern language voices. Evaluation versions of the NeoSpeech Speech packs are available upon request.

Media Semantics has partnered with Cepstral LLC, a US-based TTS vendor with several English and foreign language voices, including Canadian French and American Spanish.

Please see the purchase page for Speech Pack samples and pricing.

NEW! Character Builder 4.3 and higher will work with older Lernout & Hauspie (LH) voices. These voices are free and are available in many different languages, however they sound robotic, and are not suited for production use. These voices are not supported, and may not work under all configurations. While we are interested in your feedback, we can offer no guarantee as to their performance. You can download these voices here: British English: lhttseng.exe, American English: tv_enua.exe, Dutch: lhttsdun.exe, French: lhttsfrf.exe, German: lhttsged.exe, Italian: lhttsiti.exe, Japanese: lhttsjpj.exe, Korean: lhttskok.exe, Brazilian Portuguese: lhttsptb.exe, Russian: lhttsrur.exe, Spanish: lhttsspe.exe. IMPORTANT: These voices use the older SAPI4 runtime, which no longer ships with Windows XP or Vista. In addition to the desired language installer(s), you will need to run spchapi.exe to add support for SAPI4.
